Ongoing Projects

  • 2020 Vision "Sustainable Economics" Section

In recent years KSC worked with [who?] to produce the "Sustainable Economics" section of the "2020 Klamath Vision" document. Now we will be working to put this document into practice, as detailed below.

Possible Future Projects

  • From Trish Seiler: Rehabbing the 'Egyptian' building

  • From Art Martin: Economic Study Group

"I am interested in forming a Klamath Sustainable Communities committee on economic democracy/grassroots economic development. My idea is, the committee would start out as a study group/think tank that would explore the possibilities of sustainable, small-scale, local economic development, followed by the initiation of projects aimed at making it happen here in the Klamath Basin. For instance, we could come up with ways to create value locally (what resources do we have? what kinds of services could community members provide for each other?) and seek grants to start a non-profit micro-lending bank that would help individuals or groups start small local businesses. In the long run, such lending could be coordinated with a local currency to help protect parts of our local economy from the vicissitudes of the global financial superstructure.

"If you are interested in getting together and discussing economic democracy and sustainable local economics, please email me:

"I have also started a discussion forum on this topic on the Green Welcome Wagon, which interested people can use for connecting, planning meetings, etc."

  • Business Incubator

OIT already has the core of this, namely, an office, and a dedicated and experienced advisor. An expanded facility would also need office space, a web server, a copier/FAX machine, office supplies, a mail drop, a phone system, a conference room, and perhaps other amenities. (This might come about through Trish Seiler's suggestion, see top item above.)

  • A "buy-local" campaign.
  • Investigate the 'business waste exchange' idea (found in the Transition Towns wikipedia article). See how the Basin can implement it.
