Local producers and sources:

  • Belweather Farm is a CSA in Keno, operated by Jordan and Darrin who are also active in the Klamath County Extension. Their delivery point is the KF Farmers' Market (June thru Oct).
  • Eatwild.com claims to be the #1 Site for Grass-fed Food & Facts. They have a directory of pasture-based frams.
  • The EcoTrust FoodHub is an online listing service for regional food producers and consumers.
  • The Flying T Ranch, near Sprague River, raises grass-fed beef. They sell their product at the ranch, at Eco-Solar in KFalls, and at the GreenWay EcoMart.
  • Fresh Green Organics is Rick Walsh's greenhouse-based, geo-thermally heated CSA loacted to the south of Klamath Falls. Share prices and drop-off points are specified in the link.
  • Klamath Falls Farmers Market is the largest Farmers' Market in Klamath County. It is open Saturdays during harvest season from 9AM to 1:30PM. In addition to growers' stalls, there are artists' stalls and service booths such as the OSU Extension 'Plant Clinic' booth.
  • Klamath County Food Bank is currently providing food for at least 25% of Klamath County residents. Whew! Tough times. They are at 3231 Maywood Drive, parallel to & 1 block west of Washburn.
  • Klamath-Lake Food Explorer - is a site listing local Klamath Basin food producers, retailers, and restaurants specializing in local and organic foods.
  • Local Harvest is a website featuring links to CSA's, farmers' markets, blogs, and more (they'll try to sell you stuff they sell, but maybe that's not crucial). You can search their site for members in our area.

Other local links:

  • The Central Oregon Food Policy Council is a non-profit citizen-based advisory board whose goal is to secure the future of local food systems in central Oregon communities.
  • This Klamath-Lake County food assessment was prepared by Roopika Subramanian and others during her sojourn here.
  • Food for Oregon is a database of local and regional community food resources in Oregon. The goal is to increase Oregonians’ food security by improving access to local, sustainable food resources.
  • GMO-Free Oregon is working to put measures in control of GMO's on county ballots around the state. The KSC is considering taking a stand on the idea.
  • Healthy Active Klamath - their page on the community garden
  • Klamath Lake Community Action Services helps people in Klamath and Lake Counties with issues such as foreclosures and food assistance, and work to improve local community functioning in such areas. They provided support recently for Roopika Subramanian while she worked here on local food issues, as well as creating an excellent Local Food Guide. They recently partnered with KSC to present 'Making Home Comfort Affordable in Klamath County'; they help to support the home energy upgrades described in that program.
  • Kl Co Master Gardener Assn - to find out about the OSU Extension Master Gardener progeam
  • The Oregon Small Farms Program at OSU provides information for the commercial small farmer as well as the small acreage landowner.
  • The Upturned Spade is Darrin Culp's vegetable-growing blog, where he gives us the benefit of his extensive experience growing and selling local veggies. He also speaks on this subject at the OSU Extension 'Master Gardener' classes, as well as operating the Extension's Production Garden down by the Airport.

Family farms:

Food security:

  • Bowdon ND keeps its grocery store is an article on the Center for Rural Affairs website about a ND town that refused to let large grocery chains dictate its food future.
  • The Community Food Security Coalition is involved with programs such as Farm to School, Farm to College, Federal Policy, USDA grant application assistance, Food Policy Councils, the Healthy Corner Stores Network, Community Food Assessments, and various Conferences.
  • Super-weeds and US crops - yet another scary result of our chemical-based farming system.

Growing your own:

  • Ellen Beberman's blog is a compendium of wisdom by an experienced "north country" gardener in, it seems, upstate NY. Quite a lot of her posts are kept live there, so there's a little something for everyone.
  • Organic Gardening magazine - perhaps the unofficial Bible for organic growers and homesteaders.
  • The Seasonal High-Tunnel Initiative is a program of the National Resources Conservation Service of the USDA. It can offset a grower's cost of building high-tunnel (hoop) greenhouses on his/her land.

Rurally-oriented organizations:

  • Center for Rural Affairs is a non-profit in Nebraska that attempts to enhance rural life while providing some of the resources to do so. They keep their eyes on politics, economics, home & hearth, farm production, etc.
