OBJECTIVES
1. Disseminate materials that allow people of all ages to become educated about options for living sustainably. This includes consumption patterns, recycling, land use, home construction and remodeling, local political and democratic practices, reproductive choices, transportation, energy sources. etc.
Examples include:
Create and distribute a recycling coloring booklet and hand outs to educate grade school
children and their families
Write editorials and letters to the editor
Publish a quarterly newsletter for members, community leaders, and policy
makers
Maintain a website to educate people about issues of sustainability
Maintain a kiosk in various community locations to distribute sustainable living materials from other groups such as
the Population Coalition, Izaak Walton League, League of Women Voters, Audubon, OSU Extension Office, member organizations, etc.
2. Participate in Earth Day celebrations and other community events to focus community awareness on sustainable living.
3. Make presentations to various community groups (elementary classrooms, Kiwanis, Soroptomists, Garden Clubs, etc) to increase awareness of sustainable business and lifestyle choices.
4. Develop contacts with and present information to local elected officials, government and non-governmental agency personnel that further the goals of Klamath Sustainable Communities/KBCLF.
Examples
include:
Monitor development in the city and county so that it stays within the regulations set up by Oregon Land Use Planning.
Support plans that demonstrate sustainable land use.
Monitor the division of water resources in the Klamath Watershed. Support plans that keep adequate water supplies for all parties without diminishing the resource.
Monitor air quality. Support commercial and residential practices that keep the air clean.
Advocate for sustainable energy use tax zones and credits.
Participate in Klamath County Solid Waste Advisory Council meetings.
Work with local watershed councils.
5. Develop collaborative networks that further the goals of sustainable living by creating community activities and educational opportunities, especially regarding consumption and recycling.
Examples
include:
Work with Waste Management to promote composting through educational materials,
a compost demonstration site, and the availability of compost devices.
Support Rails to Trails Committee to promote walking and biking instead of fossil fuel energy consuming vehicles.
Whenever possible, work to include bike trails and sidewalks in all new developments.
Work with Waste Management, Klamath Falls City and Klamath County government officials to promote recycling education.
Work with local radio to air "Tips on Sustainable Living".
Create local "greenways" foundation to preserve significant public lands.
6. Support economic opportunities for businesses and individuals that promote sustainable living.
Examples
include:
Promote consumption of local products.
Create database of sustainable businesses and practices in Klamath County.
7. Work collaboratively to develop a mentoring network of individuals and businesses fostering sustainable living choices and business practices.
