Completed Projects

  • System Development Charges

In July 2001, we presented to Klamath Falls City Council regarding the Principles of Sustainability, and requested implementation of "system development charges" to the extent permitted by the state of Oregon. We also requested additional lobbying at the state level to change laws to include schools in system development charges.

  • KSC members participated in the workshop at Karen's straw-bale house at Modoc Point.
  • KSC members participated in the workshop at Jerry & Carol's straw-bale house in Bonanza.
  • October 19, 2011 presentation

On October 19, 2011, KSC and cosponsors presented at the Klamath County Library Making Home Comfort Affordable in Klamath County. Here are additional details.

Ongoing Projects

  • 2020 Vision "Sustainable Building" Section

In recent years KSC worked with [who?] to produce the Sustainable Building section of the "2020 Klamath Vision" document. Now we will be working to put this document into practice, as described below.

Possible Future Projects

  • These are all topics for presentations/seminars on 'green' building:

    • Cob construction (video avail, see bookshelf)
    • Strawbale construction (video(s) avail, see bookshelf)
    • New ideas in superinsulated construction. Although this topic has been pretty well covered in the literature, we can still add a few ideas. E.g., (1) the idea (from _Building Green_, by Snall & Callahan) of blown-in cellulose insulation with a port at the top for inspection & topping up; (2) the idea of stud walls up to 10" or 12" thick, perhaps with 'I-joist' studs, allowing a greater depth of insulation.
    • The German 'passivHaus' idea.
    • Cordwood construction. Somewhere there was a photo where the wood had been split before stacking in the wall; this SERIOUSLY decreased the necessary mortar, making the wall cheaper and improving its R-value.
    • LEED certification (contact: Tim Thompson)
    • Used building materials, appliances, furniture are at The Habitat for Humanity ReStore on Wadsworth, phone (541) 850-2173.
    • composting toilets [or does this go in 'recycling'?]
