From our new President, Art Martin
I am interested in forming a Klamath Sustainable Communities committee on economic democracy/grassroots economic development. My idea is the committee would start out as a study group/think tank that would explore the possibilities of sustainable, small-scale, local economic development, followed by the initiation of projects aimed at making it happen here in the Klamath Basin. For instance, we could come up with ways to create value locally (what resources do we have?, what kinds of services could community members provide for each other?) and seek grants to start a non-profit microlending bank that would help individuals or groups start small local businesses. In the long run, such lending could be coordinated with a local currency to help protect parts of our local economy from the vicissitudes of the global financial superstructure.
If anyone is interested in getting together and discussing economic democracy and sustainable local economics, please email me at arthurbmartin@gmail.com. I also plan on starting a "forum" discussion on this topic on the Green Welcome Wagon (http://www.greenwelcomewagon.com/index.php), so we can use that to connect and plan as well
Junior Master Gardener Summer Camp

Oregon State University Klamath Basin Research and Extension Center will be offering a youth gardening camp for children entering grades two through six. Base price for the program is $50 (supply fee).
Register by June 5 and receive $10 off. All applications must be received by June 10. Applications are available at OSU Klamath Basin Research and Extension Center, 3328 Vandenberg Road, Klamath Falls or you may download an application at http://oregonstate.edu/dept/kbrec/horticulture/jr_mg. Gypsy Soul, to perform
June 13 at 6:30 pm. Tickets will be $15 per person.
Neighbors of mine, Bill and Cherril Landwehr, have invited the fabulous duo, Gypsy Soul, to perform at their lovely home. This is certainly a night not to be missed. Cherril and Bill live down the road from me and their home, like mine, sits on a ridge overlooking the Upper Klamath and the sunset. It is a remarkable view and to listen to the soothing music of Gypsy Soul in a spot like this seems like heaven to me. If you are not familiar with Gyspy Soul please check out their website below. JPR plays them often on Open Air and they have performed at Britt, various venues in Ashland, nationally and internationally. They play beautiful enchanting music that will have you swaying in the summer breeze. Plus, like Britt, you may bring your own food, wine, chairs, blankets, etc. What more beauty could we ask for in one evening!
Seating is limited so please make your reservations early. You may respond to me through this email or to Bill directly at the email below. For those of you who don't know where this is we live just slightly north of town, off Hwy 97, in between the railroad tracks and the lake. It's a one lane road so as Bill suggests carpooling is suggested. We'll work something out once we know how many folks will be coming.
Looking forward to seeing you and spending a magical evening together. And please PASS THIS ALONG to those you know might be interested.

Gypsy Soul (www.gypsysoul.com) will be performing outdoors, at our home on the night of June 13. Tickets will be $15 per person. This talented husband and wife team will provide a memorable musical performance right here in our neighborhood. Bring a blanket or a lawn chair and invite a friend (or friends) to join the fun!
Where: 5976 Sunset Ridge Road
When: June 13, 2009 (concert starts at 6:30)
How Much: $15/person
RSVP: Please let us know as soon as possible whether or not you can attend the concert. If you plan to bring others, be sure to let us know how many will be attending. E-mail: (b.landwehr@mac.com) to make your reservation(s).
Hope to see you on the 13th of June.
Cherril and Bill
PS Because of parking and traffic considerations, we ask that you walk or carpool if possible.
Words from Bill-- You are more than welcome to bring food and drink. We're not planning for this to be a potluck. Also, people need to know that they will need to bring something to sit on (lawn chair or blanket) and perhaps some sun protection because of our exposed hillside location. Price will be $15, collected at the door. Also, I'd like people to know that we would appreciate carpooling, if possible.
Climate Leadership Initiative
The Climate Leadership Initiative at the University of Oregon and the National Center for Conservation Science & Policy invite you to attend our summer workshops (Climate Future Forums) on climate change preparation for the Klamath Basin. We will hold two sets of workshops: one for natural systems experts and a second for individuals and agencies that work with 'community' systems (built, human, economic, and cultural systems). We will hold natural and community systems workshops in both the Upper and Lower Klamath Basin.
The objectives of the workshops are to:
- assess basin level projections for climate change impacts;
- identify risks and vulnerabilities to the various systems; and
- provide recommendations for co-beneficial solutions to preparing for climate change.
Please see the attached announcement for a more detailed description of the workshops and for a complete listing of the dates, venues and RSVP information.
We look forward to seeing you this summer!
