February 18, 1999
1. Ralph Opp - Pelican Butte Ski Resort EIS concerns
Ralp presented his concerns. Everyone at the meeting had attended other presentations and were unanimous about certain concerns. It was agreed that our group needed to write a letter stating our concerns.
2. Dwight Long - Recycling
Dwight will write a letter to DEQ as per the minutes of 1-21-99 regarding Solid Waste Management.
Pam and Connie have each completed applications to the Klamath County Solid Waste Advisory Board and wait to hear about their acceptance. Thanks to each of them for their commitment!
Dwight says that the new Goodwill on Washburn Way near Wal-Mart, recycles fibers (i.e., worn out clothing, socks, etc.) as well as putting reusable clothing up for sale. Clothing with holes in it and that you are not willing to wear any longer should be donated to the Goodwill.
Dwight is ready to lead us on February 24 to form a community action team on recycling. He showed us the coloring book he helped develop in New Mexico. We were all impressed and eager to make something like this available in K. Falls. Call Dwight if you can't attend the meeting on 2-24.
3. Pre-viewed video for teens on population issues, "JAM PACKED"
The consensus was that this is an excellent film and we encourage everyone to borrow it from us (Call Leslie). We have additional copies on the way. See the reprint of the article from Population Coalition, who made this film possible for us.
4. Earth Day
Oit is hosting on April 24. We want to do a booth on Sustainability and Recycling. We need volunteers to work the booth from approximately 10am till 4pm. Call Leslie if you have ideas for setting up or working the booth.
5. Ken Johnston - Schools media list
Ken clarified that he will see if we can get some of our materials in to the schools for their use. He will also review the current list in the Media Center so that we know what, if anything, is already available about sustainability (i.e., population issues, recycling, consumerism, etc.) We'd like to get a copy of "Affluenza" to the schools also.
6. Ben Kerns - web page
Committee is meeting to discuss what should be on this page Friday, 2-26 and Monday, 3-1. Call Ben if you have ideas.
7. Jeannette Kerns - Neighborhood Project
Leslie and Jeannette will meet to move this project along on Saturday, 2-27. With the Y2K ISSUES looming on the horizon, neighborhood cohesion may become more important then in the past. We will need to help each other get through whatever chaos may occur as we move into the Millenium. We will also need a conduit to share information and resources.
8. Anders Tomlinson, photographer - Film Feats
Anders indicated that our former slide show would indeed need a tremendous amount of work to make it a useful tool. He will contact Leslie when he returns from his trip to discuss options for rewriting the script and changing the slides.
Anders is working on several films related to sustainability issues here in the Klamath Basin as well as a global film on population issues. We look forward to working more closely with Anders.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Neighborhood Project Funding - Leslie talked to Marilyn Hempel of the Population Coalition who gave us the $800 grant. She's very pleased with the work we are doing and says we are one of the more active groups in the entire country! Let's hear it for us!!**!! Marilyn would know, too as she has her ear to what is happening in League of Women Voter chapters throughout the United States regarding sustainability. She said if we can better use the $800 for other sustainability projects besides the Neighborhood Project, then we can feel free to do so. This gives us a budget for the first time, but we must allocate these dollars very carefully! We are still working on the Neighborhood Project, so we want to keep some monies available as needed.
Quarterly Newsletter - Dwight Long has agreed to be the editor of a new format for a newsletter. If you have ideas about what should be included, call Dwight.
